Blockage vs. Issue

What is the difference between a blockage and an issue?

What is a Blockage

A blockage is something that can be solved with a phone call or conversation. It does not usually have a substantial time or cost impact

Example:

  • Jack Cement cannot complete his work because a gang box is in his way
  • Jack sends a photo and communicates the blockage with the team
  • Herb Volts moves the gang box and work resumes

What is an Issue

An issue is a problem on site that needs further direction to be completed. The extra directions could be a clarifying drawing, cost tracking number, and or owner directive. Issues are more prone to cost and time impacts.

Example:

  • The plumber is scheduled to install under slab drain piping below the restrooms
  • However, he cannot finish his rough in because there is a structural steel member in conflict with his drain piping.
  • The piping cannot be lowered without lowering the ceilings of the entire room.

The construction team needs the design team to provide direction on how to proceed. The design team's response may have a cost and time impact.
